Roman Catholic Cardinal. A descendant of the family of the dukes of Castelpagano, his father, who served under General Murat, voluntarily exiled himself to Malta and later in Marseilles where Alfonso was eventually born, when Ferdinand of Naples, after his restoration by the Congress of Laibach, set about the repression of political Liberalism. With the family returning to Naples in 1830, Alfonso joined the Oratory of St. Philip of Neri on April 1, 1840, being ordained priest on May 23, 1847. Performing pastoral work in the named city of Naples between 1847 and 1870, he served as superior of the local Oratory for fifteen years. Through his personal interest and initiative, the church of the Girolamini and the cloister holding its famous library were given the status of national monument, with Capecelatro himself elected as their superintendent. Examiner of the clergy of Naples, he was named domestic prelate of His Holiness on May 6, 1879 and vice-librarian of the Holy Roman Church on the following May 15. An elegant and prolific writer who published numerous works regarding Catholic doctrine and morals, Church history and biographies of leading Catholic figures, at fifty six years of age he was elected archbishop of Capua, receiving his episcopal consecration on October 28, 1880 in Rome from Cardinal Raffaele Monaco La Valletta. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of July 27, 1885 with the title of Ss. Nereo ed Achilleo. Opting for the title of Santa Maria del Popolo on January 15, 1886, he served as Librarian of the Holy Roman Church from April 29, 1890 until his death. The Cardinal died in Capua on November 14, 1912 and lies buried in the abbatial crypt of the church of the Benedictine Abbey of Monte Cassino.
