He was the son of Lieutenant General Thomas B. Larkin and Mary Irwin Larkin who are also buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
On February 6, 1946 as Thomas Bernard Larkin, he married Esther Foote Sampson at the District of Columbia.
They had no children.
Episcopal Deacon Larkin was the first vocational Deacon ordained in the Diocese of Los Angeles and had served at St. James, Newport Beach since his ordination in 1991. He also earned a degree in law from the University of Virginia in 1942.
