Elizabeth Larkin Rochfort, recently of the Village at Incarnate Word, San Antonio, died peacefully August 19th, after a brief illness.

"Betty" as she was known to her friends grew up in a military family. From her birth in Tokyo, Japan, where her father served as military attaché, Betty's family traveled throughout the country bringing her to such "postings" as Vicksburg, MS; Fort Peck, MT; and the Panama Canal Zone, where her father served as chief engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers. During World War II, Betty, her mother and younger sister returned to their home in Washington, DC, where Betty attended George Washington University and graduated with honors. Betty met her future husband, Robert "Rocky" Rochfort, through her brother Harrison "Harry" Larkin, who was Rocky's classmate at West Point.

Betty and Rocky were married in June, 1945, and were shortly transferred to post-war Germany where Rocky flew in the Berlin Airlift and Betty raised Irish Setters. Education was of prime importance to Betty; not only was she an avid learner but she made sure that wherever her husband was stationed, they would live in a neighborhood with the best schools so that her three children could be challenged as well.

Throughout her life, Betty enjoyed bridge; brushing up her fluency in French, Spanish and German; as well as taking university level classes, including astronomy! An accomplished tennis player for many years; later in life, she could be spotted with Rocky enjoying many games of doubles with their San Antonio tennis friends. Upon Rocky's retirement from the military, the Rochforts moved to their Burr Road home where they enjoyed many years of hosting family and friends, travelling, and an active San Antonio social life.

Every Christmas Eve, Betty would sit in front of the Burr Road fireplace, and recite by heart "The Night Before Christmas" to her grandchildren. Once the grandchildren outgrew this tradition, the great nephews, nieces, and great grandchildren would sit transfixed as this beautiful lady would have them dreaming of sugar plums and treats in their Christmas stockings!

Betty enjoyed the symphony with her friends; Saint Monica's Guild, Gibbons Literary Club, and the San Antonio Alumnae Association of the Sacred Heart. After Rocky's death, Betty moved from Burr Road to the Village of the Incarnate Word, where she continued her interests in duplicate bridge, Spanish, family, friends, and travel. Betty had a long, eventful life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her three children, Mary Irwin "Mizie" Finke (Richard C) of Wake Forest, NC; Robert E. Rochfort, Jr. of Coronado, CA; and William M. Rochfort (Renee R) of San Diego, CA; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren; her sister, Mary Virginia McCann, of Dublin, Ireland; five nephews and one niece of Dublin, Ireland; London, England; and Hawaii.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Elizabeth Rochfort, Monday, August 29th, 9:00AM at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church, Alamo Heights; Father Jim Rutkowski, celebrant. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

The family is most grateful for the loving kindness and care given to our mother over the years at Incarnate Word and most recently at Park Lane West.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Sacred Heart Retirement Fund; the St. Vincent DePaul Society; or the Salvation Army.

Arrangements by Porter Loring Mortuaries, San Antonio.
