Conrad was born in Hersadermstadt/Hersadormstadt, Germany and died in Iola Kansas. His parents brought Conrad to the United States in 1849, when he was 4 years old. They settled in Illinois, believed to be Carroll County where he grew up. It is unknown if he had any brothers or sisters. Little is known about his early years or schooling. During the Civil War, he fought for the Union Army (Grand Army of the Republic), in the 75th Illinois Infantry, 4th Corps. When he returned following the Civil War, he married Mary Ann Deyo on March 16, 1868. Conrad and Mary Ann had 8 children.
