Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Villanubla, Marcelo González Martín was the son of a small merchant. Entering seminary in Valladolid, he pursued his studies at the Pontifical University of Comillas and was ordained priest in June 1941. Longtime faculty member of the Seminary of Valladolid between 1941 and 1960, he also lectured at the University of Valladolid. Diocesan chaplain of the Catholic Action and delegate of the Caritas, he founded the "Patronato de San Pedro Regalado" for the construction of houses for poor families. Canon of the cathedral chapter and synodal judge of the archdiocese of Valladolid, he was elected bishop of the diocese of Astorga by Pope John XXIII, receiving his episcopal consecration on March 5, 1961. Named coadjutor with right of succession of Barcelona and promoted to the titular archbishopric of the see of Case Mediane on February 21, 1966, he succeeded on January 7 of the following year upon the retirement of Msgr. Gregorio Modrego y Casaus. Promoted to the metropolitan and primatial see of Toledo on December 3, 1971, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of March 5, 1973 with the title of Sant'Agostino. Retiring from the pastoral government of his see in June 1995, the Cardinal died in Fuentes de Nava, Palencia, and was interred in the chapel of San Ildefonso inside the cathedral of Toledo, in front of the tomb of Cardinal Gil Álvarez de Albornoz who died back in August 1367.
