Lt. Col. Samuel Mathews was colonial Governor of Warwick County in the English Colony of Virginia, was a member of the House of Burgesses, the Governor's Council, and served as Commonwealth Governor of Virginia from 1656 until he died in office in January, 1660 . He married about 1655, but little is known about his wife. They had one son John (b. 1650 - May 1, 1706) who married Elizabeth Tavernor on March 24, 1684.

His father, Captain Samuel Mathews, arrived in Jamestown Virginia in 1619, the first of his family to come to America. Captain Samuel built Mathews Manor around 1626, but the house was burned down in 1650.

" Mathews Manor was one of the 17th-century sites excavated by Colonial Williamsburg's renowned archeologist Ivor Noël Hume during the 1960s. [1]"
