Religious figure. She was a Mexican Catholic nun who became involved in one of the most prominent events in Mexican history: the assassination of President Álvaro Obregón. The assassination occurred on July 17, 1928, in Mexico City, when José de León Toral, a devout Catholic, shot and killed President Álvaro Obregón. Madre Conchita was accused of being the intellectual instigator behind Obregón's murder, attributed to her alleged influence on José de León Toral and her participation in the radical Catholic movement known as the "Cristiada." The Cristiada was an armed conflict in Mexico during the 1920s between the anti-Catholic government and Catholic forces opposing the government's secular policies. Despite being accused of orchestrating Obregón's assassination, Concepción Acevedo de la Llata's guilt was never definitively proven. She was arrested, tried, and ultimately sentenced to 20 years in prison. On May 14, 1929, she was transferred to the Islas Marías Federal Prison. The case sparked controversy and strained relations between the Mexican government and the Catholic Church during that era. In 1940, she was released and subsequently dedicated herself to delivering lectures on religion, her experiences of religious persecution, and her time in custody. Madre Conchita emerged as a significant figure in the history of religious struggles in Mexico and became a symbol for those opposing the government's anti-Catholic policies. Throughout her life, she authored several books, including "Una mártir de México," and granted interviews to the media. A play based on her life, "El Juicio," was also staged.
