Olympic Champion. An Armenian artistic gymnast represented the Soviet Union in international competitions in 1956 and 1960. He discovered his passion for gymnastics at the age of 17 when he witnessed a group of elite Armenian gymnasts in his hometown. He won gold medals in the men's ring event and the team competition at the 1956 Melbourne Games. At the 1960 Olympics in Rome, he won gold in the rings event and silver and gold in the team competition. After the 1960 Olympics, he retired from competition and was honored as the flag bearer for Armenia twice. He also served as the President of the Armenian Gymnastics Federation from 1998 to 2021. He won 4 gold medals (1954 and 1958) and 1 silver (1958) at the World Championships. Additionally, he won 2 gold and 2 silver medals at the 1955 European Championships. He was voted the top Armenian athlete of the 20th century by journalists from the Armenian Sports Journalists Federation.
