Born Mario Miguel Guerrero, he was signed as an amateur free agent by the New York Yankees in 1968. He made his Major League debut on April 8th, 1973 and played in 66 games that year. In1978, he produced a career-high 139 hits as the starting shortstop with the Oakland Athletics. In 697 career regular season games, he compiled 578 hits, with a .257 lifetime batting average.
