Serbian Statesman. He served as the President of Serbia from December 29, 1997 to December 29, 2002. He graduated from the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law and obtained an LL.M in 1965. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he became involved with the League of Communists in Belgrade. He also got his start in the government field at the same time. He went on to serve in various government positions such as Secretary for Education and Science of Serbia (1977–1982), Director of the National Library of Serbia (1983–1987), Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to Greece (1989–1995), and Yugoslavia's Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs (1995–1997). In 1997, he, as a member of the Socialist Party of Serbia, was elected president of Serbia. His presidential tenure lasted five years before stepping down after his term expired in December of 2002. After his term, he surrendered to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia where he was tried for war crimes. He was found not guilty on all charges on February 26, 2009.
