b.1892/7624 Charles Bartley to Mary Jane & John Bartley - in Christchurch
Young Charlie was deemed "anti-militarist", fined in 1912 for not taking the Empire oath of allegiance - The Press. Charlie moved to Dunedin, finding work as a bootmaker, where in 1915 he was conscripted.
w.1916 age 24 - WWI 11203. Bootmaker. John Bartley (father), Christchurch - sailed with the 12th NZ Reinforcements out of Wellington who published: HMNZT 52. The Bugle Call of the 12th.. being the souvenir number of The Mokoia chronicle.(1916). Published on board H.M.N.Z. Transport no. 52 "S.S. Mokoia", New Zealand Army Expeditionary Force (1917) reaching Suez for service training for France. Was in the UK, likely wounded, sailing home before war's end. Embarked for New Zealand on the "Marama" on 7/8/1918 at Marseille in France, after leaving Southampton on 31/7/1918. Eventually could be reached at Watts Road, North East Valley Dunedin by 29/8/1924.
