Musician. A guitarist, in addition to a saxophonist and keyboardist, he will perhaps be remembered for his work with the British ensemble "The Alan Parsons Project." After his father died when Ian was nine years old, his family relocated throughout Scotland before settling in Edinburgh. He learned to play multiple instruments during his teenage years and after acquiring experience as a sessions performer, his break in the industry came when he contributed electric guitar playing on the one-hit wonder single "Magic" for the band "Pilot." The song achieved a number 5 placing on the American Pop Charts, in addition to earning gold record status in 1975. In 1975, he began a fifteen-year association with "The Alan Parsons Project" where he was a member of their stable of musicians. During this period, he contributed to the hits "Games People Play" (1981), "Time" (1981), "Eye In The Sky" (1982, achieved a number 3 placing on the American Pop Charts) and "Don't Answer Me" (1985). Additionally, he is noted for his solo guitar effort on the 1978 single "Wuthering Heights" by Kate Bush.
