Olympic Champion. Before starting his canoeing career he served in the Russian Army. After being discharged from service he played football, volleyball, skiing, and track. He made his début at the Olympics in 1952 at the 1952 he could do no better that 10th. in the C-1 10000 canoeing event. His second effort in the Olympics came in 1956 in Melbourne, Australia. At these Olympics he competed in the C-2 10000 metres and the C2-1000 event. In the 10000 metres event he finished in 1st. place winning the gold medal and in the 1000 metres event he finished in 2nd. place bring home the silver. From 1956 until 1960 he won 4 national titles. In 1957 Russia awarded him the title of Honored Master of Sports.
