Film Industry Figure. He was a prolific Italian film director, actor, screenwriter, and producer who was active in both the silent and sound era. He was an eclectic filmmaker and experimented with many popular trends. Born Giovanni Battista Carlo Campogalliani, his parents were actors and his brother puppeteer Francesco Campogalliani. In 1910, he made his film debut as an actor in "Re Lear' by Giuseppe De Liguoro" and made his debut as a director in 1914 with the short film "Il rivale di papà." He directed at least thirty films, often starring his wife actress Letizia Quaranta. Starting in the mid-1920s. He made films abroad, especially in Argentina, Brazil, and Germany. In 1930, he shot his first sound film with Ettore Petrolini, "Cortile." In 1934 he was awarded the gold medal at the Venice Film Festival for "Stadio," a film with a sports setting about the world of rugby. Being an eclecticist, he directed in 1936 the film "I quattro Moschettieri," which was entirely composed of puppets. During World War II, he made war-propaganda films such "Il cavaliere di Kruja" in 1940 and "Il treni crociato" in 1943. In the 1950s, he was one of the leading filmmakers of the sentimental dramatic genre.
