Author. She is recognized as a Portuguese author of the 20th and 21st centuries, who is credited with publishing 3000 chronicles for newspapers and magazines as well as novels. Her literary debut was in 1952 with the novel "Os Anjos e Os Homens." In 1965 she received the coveted Camilo Castelo Branco Prize for her book "Viver com os outros." Her most important newspaper articles were published in a 1976 collection, "Quadratim." Born Maria Isabel Guerra Bastos Gonçalves, she used the name "Isabel da Nóbrega" professionally. A lady with a free spirit, she had a very publicized personal life. She had a romantic relationship with a cardiologist, Abreu Loureiro, with whom she had a daughter and two sons. From 1954 to 1968, she cohabited with author João Gaspar Simões. In 1968, she became romantically involved with José Saramago, who credits her with literary mentoring him to write. Saramago, who later became the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature recipient, dedicated the first edition of his award-winning 1982 romantic novel, "Memorial do Convento," to her. Eventually, their nearly 20-year relationship ended with Saramago remarrying in 1988. Shortly after the April 25, 1974 Revolution, she was an organizer of the First Congress of Portuguese Writers. During her career, she received credit as a translator and a playwright, as well as appearing on radio and television. One of her three plays was "O Filho Pródigo," which was performed at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II in 1954. Books, which she translated, were "War and Peace", by Russian author Leo Tolstoy, "Time to Love, Time to Die" by German-born author Erich Maria Remarque, and "A Gun For Sale" by English author Graham Greene. The SPA awarded her the Career Consecration Award in 2008. On June 9, 2000, she was made a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit, and on April 25, 2011, was made a Grand Officer of the Order of Liberty. She was the sister of actress Tareka.
