Roman Catholic Cardinal. He was born Auri Afonso Hummes to Pedro Adão Hummes and Maria Frank. He took the name Cláudio upon his profession as a Franciscan. He received a doctorate in philosophy in 1963 from the Pontifical University Antonianum in Rome. He was ordained on August 3, 1958. Appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Santo André and Titular Bishop of Carcabia on March 22, 1975. He was promoted to Archbishop of Fortaleza on May 29, 1996 before being transferred to São Paulo on April 15, 1998. On February 21, 2001 he was created Cardinal-Priest of S. Antonio da Padova in Via Merulana by Pope John Paul II. He was one of the cardinals that elected Pope Benedict XVI in the 2005 papal conclave. He also served in the 2013 conclave that elected Pope Francis.
