Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a Captain in the 11th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 40th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war".
