Ukrainian Statesman. He served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine from June 23, 1963 to May 19, 1972. He graduated from Mariupol' Metallurgical Institute in 1935. He went on to work as a manager of large factories in both Leningrad and Kyiv. From 1954 to 1962, he served as both the mayor of Kyiv and a secretary of the Communist Party. In 1963, he became the First Secretary of the Ukrainian Communist Party and went on to serve in this position for the next nine years until 1972, when he was appointed to be deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union. He went on to serve in this position for a year until health problems forced him to resign. From 1973 to 1985, he worked as a manager of the aircraft factory in Moscow.
