Ukrainian Statesman. He served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine from May 25, 1972 to September 28, 1989. He graduated from Dnipropetrovsk Chemical Technology Institute in 1941 and after World War II, he worked as an engineer in Dniprodzerzhynsk. During this time, he became heavily involved in the inner workings of the Communist Party and started to rise in its ranks.In 1972, he became the First Secretary of the party in Ukraine, which meant he was the de facto leader of the soviet republic. He went on to serve in this position until 1989, when he was removed from power. During his tenure, he was seen as been a loyalist to Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.
