German-Swedish princess. She belonged to the Wittelsbach Dynasty reintroduced as the royal family of Sweden in 1654 (for the first time since 1448). Her father was a German who for all intents and purposes also was a Swedish prince consort since he had married the eldest daughter of King Carl IX of Sweden. Because the latter's Vasa Dynasty ended in Sweden with an abdication in 1654, and her elder brother already then had been chosen Crown Prince, he became King Carl X Gustav, elevating his father and siblings to the ranks of Swedish royalty. In 1647 she married a powerful Swedish politician and they eventually had a son and two daughters. She was a go-between for people seeking favors from her husband or the two kings who were her brother and nephew. Being just over a year older that her famous cousin who became reigning Queen Christina, she had grown up close to her and was accustomed early on to life at the royal top, but her husband fell from favor in 1653. Using the title of Princess which her brother had given her, she was treated similarly to six Bernadotte-Dynasty princesses three centuries later, when many influential Swedes thought Countess (her husband's lower noble rank) should be enough for her. She accompanied her husband, when reinstated, on some of the military campaigns abroad which he was assigned, leading to a few dramatic episodes like their hasty escape from Riga in Latvia in 1656. Twenty years later she was accused in Stockholm of witchcraft which, however, was ridiculed and led to that major witch hunt being dropped. When her husband died ten years after that, he had been in the royal doghouse again, and she complained about insufficient means, having written her memoirs four years earlier.
