US Congresswoman. She served in the United States House of Representatives from both the 13th and 15th Districts of Michigan from January 3, 1991 to January 3, 1997. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology from Wayne State University. From 1971 to 1973, she served on the Detroit Public School Board. In 1975, she won a seat in the Michigan State House of Representatives and served from 1975 to 1981. She would go on to serve on the Detroit City Council from 1982 to 1991. After making an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 1988, she decided to run again two years later, as a Democrat, for the same seat and was successful in the 1990 general election. She served in this capacity for the next six years before losing in the Democratic primary to Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick in 1996. After leaving the House, she served again on the Detroit City Council from 2001 to 2009. She passed away from complications of Covid-19.
