Mutineer. Able-bodied Seaman on the HMS Bounty. Two weeks before the mutiny on April 28, 1789, Commander William Bligh had Sumner flogged (12 lashes) for unspecified "neglect of duty". His chief role in the insurrection was to stand guard over the Bounty's more respected officers, keeping them below deck to shield them from involvement and possible injury. In 1791 he was captured in Tahiti by a search party from the HMS Pandora. When that ship foundered on the Great Barrier Reef (August 29-30, 1791), Sumner and three other Bounty prisoners were left behind to drown, still chained inside the brig.
