Mutineer. Able-bodied Seaman and Cooper on the HMS Bounty. Born in Germany, his real name was Heinrich Heildbrandt. Commander William Bligh noted that he spoke English poorly and with a heavy accent. Hillbrant must have been only peripherally involved in the mutiny on April 28, 1789, since his role in it is unaccounted for. Nevertheless he went with Fletcher Christian to Tahiti, and in 1791 was captured there by a search party from the HMS Pandora. Hillbrant later told Edward Edwards, the ruthless Captain of the Pandora, that Christian planned to settle on uninhabited Duke of York Island; whether he believed this or was merely perpetuating a ruse by Christian is not known. Either way, turning informant did nothing to help him. When the Pandora foundered on the Great Barrier Reef, Hillbrant and three other Bounty prisoners were left chained inside the brig and drowned without a chance to save themselves.
