Professional Football Player. For six seasons (1957 to 1962), he played in the defensive back position in the National Football League with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings. Born Clarence Dean Derby, he attended Walla Walla High School in Washington, where he achieved All-State in track and football. He enrolled at the University of Washington, where he played collegiate football and was team Captain in 1956. He holds the record for the longest TD from scrimmage in Husky stadium against Illinois in October 1956 and was named University of Washington Athlete of the Year in Spring 1957. Selected by the Los Angeles Rams during the 5th round of the 1957 NFL Draft, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, played 5 1/2 years as Defensive Back and Defensive Signal Caller, and 1 1/2 years with the Minnesota Vikings. He totaled 71 career regular season games. In 1959, he distinguished himself when he led the league with 7 interceptions, earning Pro Bowl honors for that season. After retiring from football, he founded his own investment performance measurement company in St. Paul, Minnesota, and diversified Corkrum & Derby Ranch in Walla Walla County, Washington to include vineyard as well as dryland crops.
