Actor, comedian. He was best known to film viewers as Lt./Capt./Cmdt. Mauser in the 1980s films "Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment" and "Police Academy 3: Back in Training." After playing football at the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California, he went back to New York and worked as a comic in the Catskills. He also studied acting with John Cassavetes and Stella Adler. In 1960, he made his acting debut on the CBS series "CBS Repetoire Workshop." He went on to appear in many television series such as "Bewitched," "The Chicago Teddy Bears," "Ironside," "Movin' On," "Baretta," "Joanie Loves Chachi," "Tough Cookies," "L.A. Law," and "Party of Five." A year later, he made his film debut as a truck driver in "Rocket Attack U.S.A.." Besides the two "Police Academy" films, he would go on to appear in such films as "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?," (1969) "The Strongest Man in the World," (1975) "History of the World: Part I," (1981) "Breathless," (1983) and "How Stella Got Her Groove Back." (1998) He also performed as a comic, both in various nightclubs and on several television shows such as "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In," and "The Dean Martin Show." In 1989, he fell off a ladder while working on the roof of his Los Angeles home, landing on his head and fracturing his first, second and seventh vertebrae. It left him a quadriplegic, but he made a remarkable recovery and turned his tribulations into a one-man stage show, "Metrano's Accidental Comedy," in which he emerged from a wheelchair to take a few steps. He continued in acting until retiring in 2001.
