Religious Leader. He was one of the senior leaders of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church in the early 1900s. After a humble childhood in Ireland and apprenticeship in Scotland, he emigrated to the United States in 1889, settling in New York. He was bereaved in 1901 when his wife died in childbirth and went on to raise five children. He dedicated his life to serving in Christian ministry and travelled the world many times, mainly by train and ocean-going liner. Despite not having a distinctive formal education, he educated himself by daily study of the Websters Dictionary which added a richness to his vocabulary and ministry. Many of his bible readings and gospel addresses became available in tract form, and he became widely respected for his gift in proclaiming the glad tidings and systematic exposition of Biblical teaching. Aside from his extensive Christian ministry, he worked for the transatlantic textile firm of Mills & Gibb, eventually becoming manager of their branch in New York. He left the firm in 1921 and joined his youngest son in a textile business known as the Taylor Linen Company. After sixty years of travelling and service, he died in Brooklyn and his son, James Junior became senior leader of the Church.
