Actor, Director. Born Mohamed Zain Shamsuddin, he is considered by many to be one of the most talented Malaysian actors. Born in Taiping, Perak, he was the youngest of 4 siblings. He attended SMK King Edward VII and later studied electrical engineering in England after failing to get into the University of Malaya in Singapore. In 1957, he starred in his first major film role in "Pancha Delima." His later films include "Sarjan Hassan," "Megat Terawis," "Si Tanggang" and "Neracha." In 1969, he started to direct his own movies. He directed and acted in "Bukan Salah Ibu Mangandong" and "Di Belakang Tabir," both of which became popular. In 1981, he directed and acted in the movie "Bukit Kepong," which was based on the Bukit Kepong incident of 1950. The movie won seven awards in the 3rd Malaysia Film Festival in 1982, including Best Film and Best Director. In 2004, he was appointed a member of the Dewan Negara in the 11th Parliament of Malaysia, making him the first actor-politician in Malaysia. He held this office until 2011. At the same time, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. In 2017, he was having a meal when he experienced breathing difficulties. He was brought to a clinic where he died.
