Writer. Born Muhammad Dahlan Abdul Baing, he was best known for his 1971 novel "Sandera," which was considered by many to be one of the greatest Malaysian novels. Born in Jeneponto, Makassar, Dutch East Indies, he attended Hollands Indische School. During World War ll, he worked as a sailor. His experience as a sailor inspired him in his work and increased his ability to write good novels. In 1954, he became a journalist and worked with a publishing company in Singapore. He later became an editor at the Kuala Lumpur Library. In 1959, he published his first novel titled "Kisah Tiga Pelayaran." In 1988, he was awarded the Malaysian National Laureate award. His 1999 novel "Sukma Angin" won the Malaysia Premier's Literary Award. He died of lung cancer in 2009. In 2016, an 80 sen stamp of him was issued under the National Laureate series, along with Dr. Usman Awang and Keris Mas.
