Writer. Born Kamaluddin Muhamad, he was one of the founders of the Asas '50 literary movement. Born in Bentong, he received his early education at the Muallimin Al-Islamiah College. He then went on to study at Pitman College, Singapore, but his studies were disrupted due to World War ll. After the war, he started his career as a teacher. At the same time, he held the post as Information Officer for the PKMM (Parti Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya) party. In 1946, he published his first short story titled "Wasiat Orang Bangsawan". In 1956, he joined Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka as an editor. He was promoted as editor in chief in 1966, then retired in 1977. In 1981, he became the first person to be awarded the Malaysian National Laureate award, and was granted an honorary doctorate in literature by The Science University of Malaysia. He died of a heart attack in 1992. Some of his novels include "Pahlawan Rimba Malaya," "Anak Titiwangsa" and "Rimba Harapan."
