Malaysian Monarch. He was the 28th Sultan of Kedah from 1958 to 2017, and the fifth and 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from 1970 to 1975, and in 2011 to 2016. He is the only person to reign as Yang di-Pertuan Agong twice. He was the second son of Sultan Badlishah. He was educated at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College in Alor Star. He went on to Wadham College and obtained a Diploma in Social Science and Public Administration. He then joined the Kedah Administrative Service. In 1958, he ascended to the throne of Kedah after the death of his father, and was installed in 1959. In 1970, he was elected as the fifth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, succeeding Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah . During his first term, he presided over the first transfer of power when his uncle, Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman resigned and was succeded by Tun Abdul Razak . His first term ended on 20 September 1975. In 2011, he was elected to a second term, which started on 13 December, ending in 2016. At the time, he was the second longest-reigning monarch in the world.
