Premier of China. A member of The Communist Party of China, he served as prime minister from 25 March 1988 to 17 March 1998. Prior to becoming prime minister, he studied at the Yan'an Institute of Natural Science starting in 1941 and ending in 1945. He then joined the Communist Party of China. In 1948 he was sent to study at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute majoring in hydroelectric engineering. He graduated in 1954. During his time in the Soviet Union he was the head of the Chinese Students Association in the Soviet Union. Returning to China in 1955, he was sent to Beijing to head up the municipal power bureau. Rising quickly in the party, he soon served as China's Vice-Minister and Minister of Power between 1979 and 1983. In 1982–1983 he served as the vice-minister of water conservancy and power. He joined the Central Committee at the Twelfth National Congress in 1982. In 1985 he was named minister of the state education commission, and was elected to the Politburo and the Party Secretariat. He was named Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China in 1987 and then Premier. He is best remembered for his 1989 crackdown on the Tiananmen square protests. He spent most of the balance of his term expanding and managing an energy monopoly, State Power Corporation of China. Many of his relatives worked for the huge company, but it was broken up after he left by the government.
