Statesman, Prime Minister of Greece. A member of Greece's Nationalist Party, he served as prime minister on five separate occasions from 1885 to 1905. Prior to becoming prime minister he studied law and entered public service in the Greek Ministry of Interior in 1843. He went on to serve as Greek Minister of Interior; Minister of Foreign Affairs; Minister of Economy; Minister of Church Affairs; Minister of Education and Greece's Ambassador to France. He served in the Hellenic Parliament beginning in 1862. He is best remembered for several disagreements with the king but represented the real wishes and aspirations of the citizenry. He was assassinated by a gambler in revenge for the strict measures taken by him against gambling houses.
