Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister. He served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1986 to 1993, and as the 2nd Chief Minister of Malacca from 1959 to 1967. He was born in 1925 to an impoverished villager, and was the 6th child of 10 siblings. In 1939, he joined the Kesatuan Melayu Muda. He was also active in the Malay Nationalist Party until it was banned by the British government in 1948. He then became a teacher and later a member of the UMNO political party. He left his job as a teacher and participated in the first Malaysian general election in 1955 in the Melacca parliament. He won a large majority and was offered the post of Chief Minister of Melacca but refused. He again won the 1959 Malaysian general election by a majority and was appointed the 2nd Chief Minister of Melacca. In 1986, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister by Mahathir Mohamad, succeeding Musa Hitam. In 1993, he was defeated by Anwar Ibrahim in a UMNO election. He died of a heart and lung condition in 2006.
