Statesman, Prime Minister of South Korea. He served from 16 May 1985 to 25 May 1987. Prior to becoming prime minister he served in the diplomatic service as the Consul General to Los Angeles beginning 1968, Consul General to New Delhi since 1972, Ambassador to India since 1973, South Korean Vice Foreign Minister and Permanent Representative in Geneva since 1976. He then served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Korea from 2 September 1980 to 1 June 1982. He then became Director of the Agency of National Security Planning of South Korea serving from 2 June 1982 to 18 February 1985. He is best remembered as an advocate of the 1980 military junta when Chun Doo-hwan took power as president in a coup in 1980 and mentor of former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
