Military Officer, Politician, Nicaragua’s First Aviator. Entering political and military service in 1909 with the overthrow of President José Santos Zelaya, Pasos Díaz was appointed Consul General of Nicaragua in New York in 1912. After returning home to Nicaragua, he entered national politics when he was appointed to serve in several presidential cabinet positions. In 1923 he was appointed Consul General in San Francisco, during which time he became interested in the potential benefits of aviation. Earning his pilot’s certification, he became the first Nicaraguan licensed to fly a plane. Afterwards he purchased and shipped to Nicaragua the country’s first planes, along with the pilots to fly them. Returning to Nicaragua, he served as Mayor of Managua in 1925 before being appointed to the cabinet of his uncle, President Adolfo Díaz, in 1926. In addition to his political career, Pasos Díaz rose through the ranks in the military to the rank of General. He was killed in action during the Nicaraguan Civil War of 1926 when he was ambushed while leading a patrol along the Escondido River.
