President of Nicaragua. Born in Nagarote in what was then still the Spanish colony of New Spain, Martínez first entered military service in 1854 during a period of civil war in Nicaragua and within a few years had risen to the rank of General. Following his participation as a leader in the successful war to remove filibuster and self-appointed President of Nicaragua William Walker from power, Martínez was appointed joint-President of Nicaragua with Máximo Jerez Tellería in 1857. A few months later, he was appointed the sole President of Nicaragua, a post he held until 1867. His time in office would represent a period of rebuilding in the wake of the devastation caused by the wars surrounding the rule of Walker and of a new prosperity for the country. In 1869 he participated in a failed attempt to overthrow President Fernando Guzmán. Following his death, he was originally buried at Cementerio de Guadalupe in León, but he and his wife were later moved for reburial to Managua.
