Jazz musician. Trained as a classical violinist in Chicago, he played trumpet and later electric bass. He joined the U.S. Army at age 23 and played in the 201st AGP Band while stationed at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. He returned to Mississippi after his tour of duty in Europe where he married Mary McDaniel. Fowlkes performed on recording sessions with bluesmen Sonny Boy Williamson, II and Jerry McCain, and accompanied national musicians Sam Cooke and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. He is the father of jazz vocalist Cassandra Wilson.
