Dr. Mary Louise McDaniel Fowlkes was born on February 13, 1926, in Hattiesburg, MS. She was the youngest of thirteen children born to Andrew and Louise Mitchell Shepherd McDaniel. Her parents and siblings preceded her in death.
Mary graduated from Lanier High School in 1944 and married Herman B. Fowlkes, Jr., in 1947. Three children were born to this union.
Dr. Fowlkes attended Jackson State College and graduated with a major in Elementary Education, and received her M.S. Degree from the University of Wisconsin in Elementary Education, the Specialist Degree in Education from Jackson State University in 1975, and her Doctorate in Education from California Coastal University, Santa Ana in 1991. Dr. Fowlkes served as a part-time Spanish teacher at Davis Magnet School and as Director for the Center for Excellence in Education at Jackson State University. She was a Reading Specialist-Spanish teacher at Barr Elementary School, Curriculum Specialist for the Jackson Public School District, and she spent over 20 years as a classroom teacher. Most of those years were spent at Johnson Elementary. Those years were the most rewarding for Dr. Fowlkes because she was able to work with students and mold their critical thinking skills.
There are many professional activities and duties that she participated in and many for which she assumed a leadership role. Dr. Fowlkes moderated reading conferences, supervised writing designs and objectives for JPS, supervised writing lesson plans, and wrote the Basic Elementary Academic Program for the Academic & Performing Arts Complex, better known to us as APAC. She served as Chairman for the Five-Year Interim Review for the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools.
Dr. Fowlkes was a devoted member of Faith Presbyterian Church where she served as a ruling elder, member of the session, Moderator of Presbyterian Women, Secretary of Circle No. 2, Chairman of the Board for Faith's Day Care Center and anything else she was asked to do, except cook. She took on the awesome task of chairing the committee to purchase pews for the church. She purchased, out of her own pocket, all pews that were not dedicated.
Dr. Fowlkes was a member of Beta Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Jackson, MS, where she served as basileus from 1979 through 1982 and as treasurer for many years. She was a member of the Margaret Walker Book Club, National Education Association, Opera South Guild, MS Association of Educators, and the Overlook Circle Block Club. Mary was a candidate for Miss Lanier in 1943 and Miss Jackson State in 1946. She received a letter of commendation from former Governor William Winter, was selected as Outstanding Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was listed in Personalities of America, selected as Outstanding Teacher and noted for Dedicated Service to the Jackson Association of Educators.
She leaves to mourn her passing three children, Aaron Maurice Fowlkes, Robert Daryl Fowlkes and Cassandra Marie Fowlkes Wilson; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a devoted nurse, Debra Pickett and family; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, sorority sisters, and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Faith Presbyterian Church, Mary Fowlkes Scholarship Fund.
