President of Nicaragua. A member of the Chamorro presidential dynasty in Nicaragua, Emiliano Chamorro gained political and military prominence as a leader in the Conservative party opposition to the presidency of José Santos Zelaya. In 1909 he was a leader in the successful overthrow of Zelaya’s government and became Chairman of the Constituent Assembly. In 1912 he was appointed Nicaraguan Minister to the United States, serving until 1916. In 1917 he was elected President of Nicaragua, an office that he held until 1921. In 1926 he overthrew President Carlos José Solorzano and declared himself President, serving as such only a few months before resigning after failing to gain international recognition for his government. He remained active in politics as the leader of the Conservative party until his death from a heart attack.
