First Lady of Nicaragua. Born into a prominent Nicaraguan family, Portocarrero graduated from Barnard College in 1950. In December of that same year, she married her cousin, and son of Nicaragua’s president, Anastasio Somoza Debayle. After her husband became President of Nicaragua, she served as First Lady from 1967 until 1972 and again from 1974 until 1979. Often compared to American First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy for her sense of style and her elegance, she is best remembered for her support of numerous social and cultural projects in Nicaragua including the Teatro Nacional Rubén Darío, the children’s hospital in Managua, and for leading the relief efforts after the 1972 Nicaragua earthquake. In 1978 she became estranged from her husband due to his having a mistress. In 1981, one year after Anastasio Somoza was assassinated, she married wealthy businessman Archie Baldocchi, a marriage that lasted until her death from cancer.
