Marjory Church Barnum of Northfield died Nov. 4 at Evanston Hospital. She was 69.


Mrs. Barnum was born in Evanston. Her parents, Ralph Edwin Church and Marguerite Church, were both members of Congress.


She received her master's degree in political science and international relations from Northwestern University in 1952 after graduating magna cum laude in international relations from Wellesley College in 1950.


Mrs. Barnum spent her junior year of college at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Internationales in Geneva, Switzerland. Prior to college she graduated from Griffin Roycemore School in Evanston and Potomac School in Washington, D.C.


Mrs. Barnum had been a real estate broker on the North Shore since 1976, most recently with Chambers & Cross in Winnetka and previously with Hokanson & Jenks in Evanston. Prior to 1976 she was director of the Voluntary Action Center of the Metropolitan Welfare Council of Chicago (1973-1976).


Mrs. Barnum served on the board of directors of the Visiting Nurse Association of Chicago (president, 1980-1982); the board of trustees of the Chicago Adler Planetarium and Astronomical Museum (1963-1968); the Junior League of Chicago (president, 1960-1962); Chicago Wellesley Club (president, 1986-1988); and the women's board of the University of Chicago. She was a consultant to the Illinois Girl Scouts during its reorganization in 1990 and continued to serve on its board of directors.


Mrs. Barnum volunteered for the National Commission on Social Work Careers, Illinois Children's Home and Aid (Evanston Receiving Home) and Evanston Hospital Women's Auxiliary Board.


She was active in Republican politics at the grass-roots level. After World War II, she volunteered at Camp Mugenbrunn helping young refugees.


Mrs. Barnum was active in the Evanston Dancing Club, Woman's Athletic Club of Chicago and Sheridan Study Club. Her hobbies included tennis, professional needlework and knitting.


Mrs. Barnum is survived by her husband, David R. Barnum; four children, Courtenay R. (Noel Jackson) Wood of Evanston, Carol C. (Edward) Risinger of Wilmette, Catherine M. (David Bambic) Wood of Evanston and Grace E. Wood of Northfield; her brothers, Ralph E. Church Jr. and William S. Church; her sister-in-law, Marion Barnum Ingersoll; and three grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her son, James O. Wood III, and her first husband, James O. Wood Jr.


Funeral services were Nov. 10 at the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston.
