Politician. He was one of the most important figures in recent Irish political history. He was actively involved in his local community in Derry during the 1960's, where he was a founding member of the Credit Union and a leading figure in the civil rights movement in the city later in the decade. He was a founding member of the SDLP nationalist party in Northern Ireland and served as a Member of the European Parliament, a Member of the UK Parliament and a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly. He is credited as one of the architects of the Northern Ireland peace process. John was a co-recipient of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize with David Trimble. The Nobel Committee stated that the award was "for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland". He has also received the Martin Luther King Award (1999) and the International Gandhi Peace Prize (2001). He is the only person to receive the three major peace awards Upon his passing, Irish President Michael D Higgins said Mr. Hume had "remodeled politics in Ireland" and hailed his "personal bravery and leadership." Former US President Bill Clinton said Mr. Hume "fought his long war for peace in Northern Ireland" and "His chosen weapons: an unshakeable commitment to nonviolence, persistence, kindness and love."
