Azilee Johnson Caballero Canfield, a longtime resident of Signal Mountain, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002. She was 91.

Mrs. Canfield was born in Coalfield, Tenn., a daughter of the late Alonza Foster and Isobell Cooper Johnson.

She also was preceded in death by a sister, Reba Burk, and daughter, Dianna A. Caballero.

Mrs. Canfield started school at the age of 8 in Pitts, Ga., where her parents were known as experts in school consolidation, bringing four county high schools into one entity. She graduated from Central High School not with honors, but with scholarships.

She graduated from the University of Chattanooga with a B.S. degree and, in her freshman year, won the first Girl Scout Golden Eagle Award. Always interested in the Scouts, she led troops at Pilgrim Congregational Church and on Signal Mountain. Her ability to keep on learning may partly account for her success as a county schoolteacher for 34 years, a career that ended in her retirement shortly before she ran for election to the Charter Commission.

The career began at Central with her mother, who was then teaching at East Lake Junior High School, signing the contract because she wasn't old enough. After a year, she went to Tyner High School and taught biology and senior English. At Tyner she was also the girls' coach. Her girls won county and district track meets. For 14 years, she was chemistry teacher at Red Bank High School. Her last post was at Signal Mountain Junior High School, where she spent six years.

Mrs. Canfield's teaching years were full of plenty besides teaching. She garnered a master of education degree from the University of Chattanooga and did graduate work at Tufts University, the University of Tennessee and Carnegie Tech. She had written articles for scientific and technical journals.

A former state membership chairwoman of the National Science Teachers Association, she received the Academy of Science Outstanding Science Teacher award from the state of Tennessee. She was a teacher for the National Science Foundation for Gifted Children. She held membership in the Tennessee Education Association of the American Academy of Science, American Chemical Society, Tri-Beta Alumnae Association, Phi Mu Alumnae Association, Moccasin Bend Chapter of the DAR, Optimist Club, Signal Mountain Welfare Council, Alexian Brothers Rest Home Auxiliary, Catholic Business Women's Club and St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Her survivors are a daughter, Carmen C. Reilly, Richmond, Va.; two stepdaughters, Betty Ann Machen, Hixson, and Yvonne Bervellotti, To ledo, Ohio; grandchildren, Chris Reilly, Edward Reilly, Michael Reilly, Karen Reilly Jones and Robert Schmidt; four step-grandchildren, Michelle Hatfield, Mark, Nathan and Claudie Bervellotti; eight greatgrandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul J. Valleroy officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church from 9 a.m. until the hour of service, Friday, Oct. 4.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Girls Scout of America or a Catholic charity.
