Physician. George Cleghorn was a New Zealand physician and surgeon who served as President of the New Zealand Medical Association. After studying in England, Cleghorn went to New Zealand where he was positioned as a surgeon at Wairau Hospital. Here, he implemented the routine sterilization of medical equipment and did research into neurosurgery with interests in uric acid and immunology. He is credited as conducting the first successful appendicectomy in New Zealand and also carried out a two stage laparotomy on the Prime Minister of New Zealand John Ballance in an attempt to save his life. He assisted in the improvement of assistance for mentally ill patients.
