US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Ohio's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1971 until 1974. An All-American swimmer during his high school years, he served with the United States Navy during the closing months of World War II. Upon his returned home, he enrolled at the University of Cincinnati where he received his degree in Law. He was admitted to the bar in 1950 and practiced law privately prior to serving as Ohio's assistant attorney general. He served as a municipal judge before being elected to judge of Hamilton County, Ohio's Common Pleas Court. He began his political career when he was elected to and served in the Cincinnati City Council from 1967 until 1970. He succeeded Robert A. Taft. Jr., in Congress and resigned his seat in 1974 in order to become CEO of the Cincinnati Inquirer.
