Politician, Author, Doctor, Soldier. He was a member of the New Zealand Legislative Council, serving for thirty-three years after a formal invitation from the Premier Sir William Fox. He had served with the British Army during the New Zealand Wars, seeing action at Taranaki while acting as a surgeon. Prior to his war service, Grace had been trained and taught as a surgeon in Europe, obtaining his diploma in medicine in 1858. He joined the Colonial Forces during his service and became their Surgeon-General. In 1891, he was awarded The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George. He was the brother of Irish-American Businessman Michael P. Grace and the first Catholic Mayor of New York, William Russell Grace.
