Dr. John J. Grace, 85, died at his home at Bayside Acres yesterday after a brief illness.
Dr. Grace was born in New Zealand, and took his medical training at the University of New Zealand and the University of London. He was for many years on the staff of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, London.
During the first decade of this century, he practiced medicine in Hilo, HI, where he married Eleanor Vere Greenfield, sister of the late Charles E. Greenfield or Ross.
During the first decade of this century, he practiced in London, moving to Jamaica in the West Indies in 1920 on the death of his brother, who had founded a shipping firm there. Dr. Grace took up ownership and management of the firm, and until his retirement in 1942, was managing director of Grace, Kennedy, and Co., Ltd, of Kingston, Jamaica.
Since 1942, he had made his home in Marin.
Survivors include his wife; 2 daughters, Alicia, Comtesse de Brosses of Paris, and Mrs. Denis C. Muir of Bayside Acres; and a son John G. Grace, Sausalito architect.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, San Rafael, with interment in Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery.
