Lise "Libby" Biel, Civic-Minded Activist:
Asbury- Lise "Libby Biel, 90, of Asbury, died Sat. Aug. 4, 2007 at home surrounded by her family. Mrs Biel was born Feb. 2, 1917 in Hamden (Sidney area), the daughter of the late Dankert and the late Minga (Stefana) Arnesen in an old historical house now known as the Stewart House.
She worked for the Clinton Correctional Institution (then Clinton Farms) as a mailroom supervisor for 25 years, retiring in 1984. She also served as Notary for the State of New Jersey during her 25 years there.
Libby was raised in Sidney, but lived in Asbury for over 70 years. She attended Sidney Grade School and graduated from the Old Clinton High School in 1935. She served as chairperson of the Old Clinton high School Class of 1935 reunion.
Libby was a member of the Norton Methodist Church for over 50 years. She helped organize and open the Norton Methodist church Thrift Shop in 1983. She wrote about the history of Norton Church and its historical surrounding areas of Van Syckel - dating back to the 1700's. The article is recorded in the Union Township Historical Book. She was also the secretary of the Norton Cemetery Association for 20 years.
Mrs. Biel worked on the Planning Board of Bethlehem Twp. (Hunterdon County) for four years and worked on the Bethlehem Township Bicentennial Committee. She was on the Board of Directors for the Hunterdon County Citizens and Taxpayers Association. She was a coordinator with Area on Aging for Bethlehem Township and Union Township and served on the advisory counsel to the Hunterdon County Area on Aging in Flemington for one year.
She was the secretary of Jugtown Landowner's Association for 20 years and also secretary of the West Norton Sportsman Association. She was a life member of the NRA and a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Pattenburg. She was also a member of MADD. She worked for the Triathlon sponsored by the Clinton Rotary Club. She was a life member of Sidney Grange #215.
She was an advocate of the State Police and was a member of the Hunterdon County 200 Club. In 1976, she petitioned the Freeholders to lace a Clinton State Police Barracks in the Perryville area. The resolution was adopted by the Freeholders, thus creating the Perrville Barracks.
Survivors include her children, Joanne O'Brien, Carol Jule Minick and Daniel Joel Biel; her sister, Werna Dalyrmple;15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph J. Biel Sr.; her son, Joseph John Biel Jr; her daughter, Lise Bronish; her sister, Dorothy and her brothers, Daniel, Dankert and Anton.
A funeral service will be held 9 am Wed. at the Martin Funeral Home, 1761 Rte. 31, Clinton, with Rev. Jim DeVries officiating. The interment will be at the Norton Cemetery on Charlestown Road in Bethlehem Township. The visitation will take place 7-9 pm today and 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
All funeral arrangments are under the direction of Martin Funeral Home. Donations in her memory may be made to Norton Church Cemetery Association, Perpetual Care, c/o Mr. Bob Everett, 24 County Road 635, Hampton NJ 08827, or the Hunterdon Hospice, 2100 Wescott Dr, Flemington NJ 08822.
