Australian Statesman. He served as the 23rd Prime Minister of Australia from March 11, 1983 to December 20, 1991. Born Robert James Lee Hawke, he attended the University of Western Australia and went on to University College in Oxford, England as a Rhodes Scholar. In 1957, he became the research officer at the Australian Council of Trade Unions and ten years later, its president. During the 1970s, he rose through the ranks of the Labor Party, which he had joined in 1947. In 1980, he was elected to Parliament from the safe Melbourne seat of Wills. In early 1983, he became the leader of the Labor Party and in March of that year, led the party to a landslide victory in the national election. He became prime minister and held this office for the next eight years. He led the Labor Party to three more victories (1984, 1987, and 1990) and made various reforms in different areas of Australian life during his tenure. He was ousted as both the leader of the Labor Party and prime minister by his deputy Paul Keating in December of 1991. He continued to be involved in the Labor Party until his passing.
