French New Wave film writer and director. Born Arlette Varda, she changed her name to Agnès at 18 and studied art history at the École du Louvre and photography at the École des Beaux-Arts before working as a photographer at the Théâtre National Populaire in Paris. She was married to film director Jacques Demy from 1962 until his death in 1990. Two of her best known films were Cléo From 5 to 7 (1961) and Vagabond (1985). She received the honorary Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the European Film Academy in 2014, and in 2017, she received an Honorary Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her contributions to cinema, making her the first female director to receive such an award.
